19 May Commemoration Of Atatürk, Youth And Sports Day

May 19th is a very important day in Turkey. In 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk came to Samsun Port, where he started the War of Independence.

As a result of this war, the country was liberated from the invading foreign forces. Mustafa Kemal who led Turkey to independence declared on 29 October 1923 the Republic of Turkey.

Mustafa Kemal was elected the first president and initiated a radical transformation to modernize the country. He received the surname of Atatürk, which meant the ancestor of the Turks, in 1934 for his achievements.

He devoted May 19 to “Youth and Sports” as a gift to the youth of the country that Atatürk always regarded as the future of the Republic.

Every year, 19 May (Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day) is celebrated with various festivals across the country and people respect Atatürk in Anıtkabir.
